Strong Rankings in Google and Bing Yield Strong Visibility Across AI Search Platforms:

Ever since ChatGPT launched in November of 2022, Glenn has been heavily analyzing how brands and websites perform across AI Search surfaces and platforms. From ChatGPT to Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, to Gemini and Claude, Glenn has helped clients form a strong strategy for being visible across AI Search.

And it’s important for site owners to understand that SEO is the foundation for AI Search. When AI Search platforms ground answers via Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), they leverage Search to do that (which is often Google or Bing). So organic search performance can directly impact AI Search performance.

Both Google and Bing have published documentation and articles explaining that good SEO is good GEO. In Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features on Google Search, they explain, “The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.”

And as Google’s Danny Sullivan explained in his presentation where he covered that Good SEO is Good GEO, he said, “What you’ve been doing for SEO is still perfectly fine and still the things you should be doing.”

In addition, Bing’s Krishna Madhaven explained in his article on the topic, “It’s important to understand that traditional SEO fundamentals still matter.” So, the core work site owners perform for SEO is the foundation for good GEO, AEO, LLMO, or whatever else you want to call it.

And for Google, both AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in Google’s core quality and ranking systems. Therefore, performing well in Google Search can also yield strong rankings in both AI Overviews and AI Mode. In addition, Gemini is also rooted in Google’s search systems. So doing well in Google Search can yield strong results across all of Google’s AI surfaces and platforms.

Here is Google’s Danny Sullivan presenting the topic at WordCamp:

For Bing’s generative AI answers (its version of AI Overviews) and Copilot (its AI chatbot), both are rooted in Bing’s core search ranking systems. So performing well in Bing organic search can yield strong results in Bing’s version of AI overviews and in Copilot. In addition, Bing is an official partner of OpenAI, so ChatGPT often grounds its answers via Bing’s search index. So performing well in Bing can yield strong results in ChatGPT as well.

Bing is an official partner of Open and is used to ground answers in ChatGPT

Play the long game with AI Search and avoid risky tactics that can cause short-term gain but long-term pain:

Mt. AI

Glenn Gabe coined the phrase “Mt. AI” based on seeing a number of sites push the limits to try to gain an advantage in AI Search. For example, using risky and spammy tactics to scale content, gain inauthentic mentions across third-party sites, poison AI answers, and more. And when that happens, there could be a short-term visibility gain across platforms. But, that’s typically short-lived.

When Google’s systems figure it out, the visibility gains can come crashing down. So visibility trending surges, holds for a bit, and then plummets. The trending looks like a mountain, hence “Mt. AI”.

It looks like this:

Unfortunately, that’s a short-term strategy that can end up very badly for companies. After the crash, there will need to be remediation, and then Google and Bing’s system will have to see those positive changes over the long term in order for sites to recover (if they do recover). And while that’s happening, visibility can remain low and websites won’t rank in Search or AI Search as much (or at all). Note, Google covers a number of important topics related to this in their documentation about optimizing for Generative AI features.

Glenn has always helped companies form a long-term strategy for gaining strong visibility across platforms. That includes organic search and now AI Search. Glenn has decades of experience helping companies recover from algorithm updates and manual actions, so he is well-versed in surfacing quality problems and forming a plan of attack for addressing those issues.

Glenn was there when Panda launched, Penguin launched, the Product Reviews update launched, the Helpful Content Update launched, and more. Glenn believes we are in a Pre-Panda or Pre-Penguin situation right now where both Google and Bing are crafting systems to tackle AI spam.

Why?…

Glenn believes there is no way Google and Bing can continue to let site owners spam their way to the top of AI Search platforms by flooding their search indexes with low-quality or spammy content. Both Google and Microsoft are aware of the AI spam situation so it’s probably just a matter of time before specific algorithm updates roll out addressing those issues.

From Glenn’s perspective, the goal is to build a powerful foundation for ranking across Search and AI Search (and done the right way… without risky or spammy tactics that yield short-term gains, but long-term problems).
